Aligarh: The ten week basic course on Remote Sensing, GIS and GNSS being conducted by IIRS, Dehradun in collaboration with the consortium for Educational Communication, UGC, Space Application Centre, Ahmedabad and Amrita E-Learning Research Lab has been started on a successful note at Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University.
The course, organized under the aegis of the National Natural Resources Management System (NNRMS), is scheduled to conclude on November 18.
Welcoming the guests, Professor Liaqat AK Rao, Chairperson, Department of Geology and Edusat Coordinator informed that the course, divided into four modules, is aimed at imparting instructions on the basics of space technologies as applicable to the fields of Earth Sciences, Environmental, Ecosystem, Agricultural, Forestry and Ecology, Water resources Atmospheric and Marine Environment, Urban and regional planning, Natural resources and Disaster Management, Soil resources and Application of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing, etc.
He said that first module is based on Remote Sensing and Digital Image Analysis, second on Global Positioning System, third on Geographic Information System and the fourth one on Remote Sensing and GIS Application. Professor Rao told that the Course will enable the participants to interact with the resource person and clarify any doubts they may have in so far their understanding of the lecture concerned. He informed that at least 145 Faculty members, research scholars, post graduate and under graduate students of Departments of Geology, Geography, Wildlife, Zoology and Botany, ZH College of Engineering and Technology, AMU Polytechnic , Women’s College, and Interdisciplinary department of Remote Sensing and GIS are participating in the course.
Professor Rao hoped that the course will provide basic essentials, motivation and encouragement to the participants to apply space technologies in their studies and research. In the inaugural program, Dr SK Srivastava presented the welcome address and introduction to IIRS Outreach Programme and briefly introduced about 18th course, Training and academic activities of IIRS were enlisted by Dr Sarnam Singh, Dean (A), Programme reception and mode of delivery by Dr Poonam S Tiwari, Programme Coordinator whereas the modules were briefly explained by Module Coordinators Ms Meenakshi Kumar, Mr Ashutosh Bhardwaj, Mr Prasun K Gupta and Dr Ajit Roy. The inaugural lecture was delivered by Dr A Senthil Kumar, Director, IIRS (Dehradun).
