Harish Rawat-led Congress government set to resume power in Uttarakhand, SC allows the centre to revoke President’s Rule

India, New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) Today allowing the central government to revoke President’s Rule in view of Harish Rawat’s success in proving the majority in the floor test. The Harish Rawat-led Congress government is set to resume power in Uttarakhand.

A bench led by Justice Dipak Misra accepted Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi’s submission that the central government would revoke the President’s Rule on Wednesday to enable Rawat resume charge as the Chief Minister of the state. The bench said the Centre will play before it the cabinet’s decision revoking the President’s rule and Rawat could assume office immediately thereafter. The court also declared the result of the floor test, underlining Rawat secured 33 votes in the floor test that was conducted on Tuesday under the supervision of the court-appointed observers.

Rawat’s counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal appreciated the government’s stand. The floor test to prove the Congress government’s majority was held after a political battle that lasted over a month with the Centre imposing President’s Rule on March 27 after nine Congress MLAs voted with the BJP in the House on the budget-related Appropriation Bill on March 18. The House Speaker disqualified the rebels, and the decision was upheld later by the High Court and Supreme Court, which paved the way for the floor test.
