India’s water problem, Amir Khan talks

India, New Delhi:  Over the past 20 year, around 3,00,000 farmers have committed suicide in India . Water scarcity and crop failure are the major reasons for it. Today, one-third of India is affected by drought, the Centre recently told the Supreme Court.

In more shocking revelations, it was found that 33 crore Indians are living in places with massive drought (more than 25% of India’s population) and big water reservoirs in the country are only 1/4th full. India is clearly fighting a severe water crisis and there’s no denying that.

Therefore, it’s imperative for each one of us to do our bit. In this spirit, actor Aamir Khan has pitched in to do his. Known for being vocal on social issues through his TV show ‘Satyamev Jayate’ (which also had a hard-hitting episode on water scarcity), Khan has now launched ‘Paani Foundation’, an organisation to bring about a ‘water revolution’ and to fight India’s water crisis. Led by Satyamev Jayate’s director, Satyajit Bhatkal, it has also launched the ‘Satyamev Jayate Water Cup’, a watershed management competition between villages of Maharashtra. We surely hope that this initiative coupled with people’s power and participation brings about some real, on-ground change! Let Aamir Khan now tell you more about Paani Foundation and what they aim to achieve.
